Unisono runs private music lessons in Warsaw at ul. Konstancińska 9 flat 1, in the Mokotów district, opposite the exit from the Sadyba Best Mall. Every lesson is one to one, taught by a musician who also performs. We teach piano, violin, guitar, cello, flute and singing, from the very first lesson through to ABRSM examination level, and we have been doing it since 2008.
Lessons are given in English and in Polish, and in the guitar class also in Russian and Belarusian. Many of our students come from international families living in Warsaw, so an English speaking child or adult can start with us without any language barrier.
What instruments we teach
Each instrument is taught by a specialist rather than by a general music teacher. You can read the full profile of every teacher before you decide.
- Piano lessons in Warsaw. Taught by Dr Artur Chmara, a performing pianist and prize winner of international competitions. The school owns a Kerntopf piano once used by Ignacy Jan Paderewski, plus a grand piano and four uprights.
- Violin lessons in Warsaw. Taught by Zofia Zwolińska, founder and director of the school, and by Piotr Nermer, who also teaches the viola.
- Guitar lessons in Warsaw. Taught by Piotr Bielski, fourteen years of teaching experience, acoustic and classical guitar. See also our guitar lessons page.
- Cello lessons in Warsaw. Taught by Katarzyna Tarkowska and by Marcelina Wojton, cellist of the Gorzow Philharmonic.
- Flute lessons in Warsaw. Taught by Kaja Morawiec, transverse flute and baroque traverso.
- Singing lessons in Warsaw. Classical singing and voice production with Elwira Janasik, mezzo-soprano of the Grand Theatre National Opera, and popular and jazz repertoire with Alicja Gasparska.
How a lesson works
A lesson lasts thirty, forty five or sixty minutes, depending on the age of the student and how far they have got. The time is fixed for the whole year and agreed with you individually, which matters more than it sounds, because a music lesson has to sit between school, homework and everything else.
We work to our own curriculum, without marks and without a rigid semester calendar. The repertoire is chosen for the individual student and the pace follows what they can do, rather than the other way round. There is no entrance examination and no audition to join.
The first lesson
The first meeting needs no preparation at all. The teacher looks at the shape of the hand, at how the student responds to sound, and asks what music they listen to and how much time they can realistically give to practice at home. That last answer decides the pace of the coming months more than talent does.
Who we teach
Children usually start between the ages of five and seven, depending on the instrument. The piano and the violin can begin earliest, wind instruments a little later because they depend on lung capacity and on the size of the hand.
We also teach teenagers and adults, with no upper age limit. Adult beginners are a large part of our school, and a good number of them came back to an instrument they had abandoned as children. There is no separate track and no different room for them, only a different plan of work.
ABRSM examinations
Students who wish to can be prepared for the examinations of the Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music. The ABRSM system runs from Grade 1 to Grade 8 and is recognised internationally, which matters for families who move between countries. The examinations are optional and nobody is pushed towards them.
Student concerts
Several times a year we hold student concerts at the Szuster Palace on Morskie Oko street in Mokotów, the seat of the Stanisław Moniuszko Warsaw Music Society. Performing is not compulsory, but it is usually what makes the biggest difference to how a student works at home. Common questions about music lessons in Warsaw
Do you teach adult beginners?
Yes. Adults can start at any age and at any point in the year. Every lesson is one to one, so nobody is compared with anybody else.
Are lessons taught in English?
Yes. The school teaches in English and in Polish, and a large part of our student body comes from international families living in Warsaw.
Do I need my own instrument to start?
Not at the beginning. We will help you choose the right instrument and, for the string instruments, the right fractional size for a child.
Do I need to read music?
No. Reading music is taught during the lessons, alongside playing.
When can I start?
At any point in the school year. Because the school works to its own plan rather than a semester calendar, there is no need to wait for September.
